Tyler Horn is an artist and musician who works with a variety of mediums including sound, video, installation, sculpture, and performance. Frequently using found materials and communication technologies, Horn’s work is focused on the unseen phenomena that occur at the intersection of physical and metaphysical.
Instinct, intuition, and improvisation are guiding principles in his creative process.
Horn uses commonplace objects such as radios, rotary telephones, online video interfacing platforms, and musical instruments to explore themes of extraordinary in the ordinary. These works often include collage to create a sense of three dimentional space in a two dimensional plane, and are inspired by original music, typically created by blending acoustic and software instruments, as well as the utilization of studio production for refined finished mixes.
Horn’s latest works have been sound sculpture, installations, and performance, fabricating interactive spaces with natural materials and technology to create participatory sound experiences.
His recent collaboration with design build practice, Fourth Workshop, was installed at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas in the fall of 2020. He is also a founding member of the SLO Radio collective based in Carbondale, Illinois. He has worked as a music producer and engineer on several professional and personal projects, including two full length albums which he wrote, performed, and produced.
Horn has taught sound and multi-media courses at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he received his MFA in media arts.
